After Antigone Sr. / Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at The Judson Church (L) and The Ghost of Montpellier Meets the Samurai, manifestos of hybridity as a choreographic process presented in 2013 and 2015 at the Centre Pompidou with the Autumn Festival, Trajal Harrell explores the power of dance in order to rewrite literature in Tambourines.
The New York choreographer’s latest work is based on The Scarlett Letter: A Romance by Nathaniel Hawthorne, which was published in 1850 but set in the mid-17th century in Massachusetts. A North American classic, the novel is about the misfortunes of Hester Prynne, who was forced to have the letter “A” embroidered on her clothes because she had a child with a man to whom she was not married. The story illustrates every aspect of the patriarchal rule over women: control of the freedom of the body through guilt and punishment by public humiliation. By celebrating movement and pride in the body, Trajal Harrell and the dancers of Schauspielhaus Zürich Dance Ensemble offer redemption to the character of Hester Prynne by giving a different ending to her story.
