Ali Kazma

The event is over
For nearly twenty years, Ali Kazma (born in Istanbul in 1971) has explored human work, filming filmed images of gestures and energy, the mystery of which he attempts tirelessly to interrogate. The artist thus accords a central role in his works to hands.
Clerk (2011) documents the repetitive movements of a notary's clerk who transforms a routine task into a rhythmic ballet. Scarification (2013) studies the artistic traces of a tabooer's incisions on a skull and his film Calligraphy (2013) follows the volutes of ink that a calligrapher's hand lays on paper.
In addition to studying gestures, Ali Kazma aspires to film the essence of intellectual and creative activity, particularly that of books and reading. With Printing Studio (2012), he observes the artisan know-how of printing and engraving, while Press (2019) depicts the industrial production of a newspaper. For his film House of Letters (2015), Ali Kazma focuses on the intimacy of writer Alberto Manguel's library, observing its ecosystem and the life of its books in the manner of a biologist.
For the first time in France, this projection is an opportunity to present the artist's latest research, which has led him to the Istanbul home of Orhan Pamuk on the banks of the Bosphorus, in search of the elusive process of creative writing.
