Scientific research

Presentation

Research lies at the heart of the Centre Pompidou’s missions, thus takes multiple forms and invents new formats.

Each action undertaken by the Musée National d’Art Moderne to add to, document or present the collections generates new knowledge. The same can be said for the temporary exhibitions, which are aimed at promoting discovery and re-discovery.

It also includes applied research, as the fundamental restoration programmes conducted by the Museum demonstrate.

It is thus a research centre through its institutional tasks and also a resource centre. At its core, the Kandinsky Library provides access to its outstanding documentary resources to researchers on a daily basis.

The Centre Pompidou is a member of various academic consortiums, in particular EUR ArTeC, the "Création, Arts, Patrimoines" [Creation, Art, Heritage] Labex and the Patrima Foundation. With the support of various partners, and notably the Friends of the Centre Pompidou, it implements medium to long-term research projects around four focus points:

  • projects drawing on the major resources of the Musée National d’Art Moderne collections;
  • projects drawing on the archival resources held by the Kandinsky Library;
  • projects to support the Museum’s prospective action for acquisitions or exhibitions;
  • projects around the institution, based on a multi-disciplinary approach.
