"At the salon, there was a large canvas covered with phrases and signatures left by visitors. Pots of paint were scattered over the floor. He invited me to sign." remembers Man Ray
In march 1921, while suffering from ophtalmic shingles, a disease which inspired several of his works, Picabia painted a single eye around which he invited his friends to write a phrase of their choice. The signatories of his collective work that questions the idea of the artist and the masterpiece included Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp and Jean Cocteau. Presented at the Autumn Salon, the work wax later sent to the Le Boeuf sur le Toit cabaret, which was a regular haunt of the Dadaists.
