Hausmann's phonetic poems erase the boundaries between visual art, poetry, music and dance.
With his Dadaist friends, Raoul Hausmann played on the collapse of language, which had become a political propaganda tool, to restore to it a sacred, magical dimension. His "poster poems" were a return to the primordial elements of language: letters and punctuation marks. Hausmann himself recited his radically sober and abstract poems on the stage of the Austria Cafe in Berlin. Accompanied by a tambourine,he sang, shouted or whispered them, involving his entire body in an almost dance-like manner.
