Yuan Jai's works combine references to the history of Western and Chinese art.
For Charge, the artist took inspiration from Five Bulls, a painting by Han Huang and one of the few remaining works from the Tang dynasty (618-907). The work depicts a line of five bulls in different positions with various expressions. ln the centre of the painting, the bull cut in half with a reclining buddha on top is a reference to a bronze work from the Warring States period representing a bull fighting a tiger. The charging bull in the centre echoes the famous sculpture Charging Bull ( 1989) by Arturo Di Modica, installed in the financial district of New York.
