Adieu New York
1946
"You know, the USA is a country with innumerable rubbish dumps. People throw everything away rather than repairing it. So here you see bits of metal, arms of machines and even neckties."This was Fernand Léger's commentary on this painting begun in the United States and completed on his return to France. The work figures among the landscapes that inspired the artist with objects abandoned in the countryside of upstate New York, where he began to live in 1943. Mixed up with plants, this waste from industrial society stands out from coloured
blacks dissociated tram the drawing. We find this process, inspired by music hall lighting, in works from the 1950s.
