Mit dem schwarzen Bogen
(Avec l'arc noir)
1912
A large black arc holds back three blacks of colour that are ready to collide with each other.
These "three continents colliding" are held in place by a black arc inspired by the "douga", a part of the traditional Russian harness for three horses. Here, the world of appearances is transformed into a world of shapes and colours, of nuances and movement. With shimmering touches, the lines are dissociated from the colours, creating a variety of matches and mismatches. Akin ta the principle of dissonance used by composer Arnold Schonberg, this quest led Kandinsky to invent an abstract visual language as powerful as music.
