Exploiting the great processing power of today’s computers, architects and designers are generating designs by simulating the morphogenetic processes of living beings, coded by DNA. Andrew Kudless [Matsys] has drawn inspiration here from the calcareous shells of barnacles, sessile crustaceans that live in dense aggregates, reproducing simultaneously. The organic unfolding, the helical twist and the surface of rib and fold, excrescence and void, testify to a new way of thinking architectural engineering.
