Hände hoch!
(Haut les mains!)
1938
Klee responds to a climate of terror with fantasy and a childish simplification in this depiction of a scene of arrest.
Paul Klee had to leave Germany and seek refuge in Berne after Adolf Hitler came to power. There the painter radicalised his vocabulary in figures reduced to pictograms, as in this puppet-like character. The violent scenes he had witnessed and the banning of his work as "degenerate art" led him to depict terror in this schematic, almost ironic form.
