La Phalène
[1959 - 1960]
ln this suspended moment, Balthus evokes the transitional state between sleep and wakefulness as well as the passage between childhood, adolescence and maturity.
After the war, Balthus sought refuge in Chassy. There he began to paint everyday scenes inspired by the decor in the rooms of his new residence: a tiled floor, plain wallpaper in bedrooms. The chequerboard motif on the side of the bed base is recurrent with Balthus, always associated with sleep and dreams. ln heraldry, a coat of arms chequered with argent and sable is in fact the dreamlike structure par excellence, at once a sign of a troubled state of consciousness, ambiguity and indecision, a symbol that could not fail to delight the painter.
