Steven Cohen
Boudoir
24 - 26 Nov 2022
The event is over
Famous for his actions in the public space, South African artist Steven Cohen invites us into the intimate space of his boudoir for his new creation. The lowly esteemed, or even despised, philosopher Sade made it the place of unashamed and newfound freedom by combining sexuality and philosophy, intimacy and social criticism of dogmas and restrictive powers.
The artist’s Boudoir is a room of old-fashioned elegance bringing together a diverse range of work-objects and items of furniture, like a room filled with individual and collective memories. It is a performance-installation that combines his work as a choreographer-performer and visual artist.
In contrast to this intimacy, Steven Cohen presents a selection of his films made outside in symbolic locations or places or remembrance. Forms and actions – centred around Steven Cohen’s transformed body – reveal how inner conflicts, representations and the law are interwoven.

Steven Cohen is a performer, choreographer and visual artist who orchestrates interventions in public places, art galleries and theatres. His work highlights that which is on the margins of society, starting with his own identity as a white, gay, Jewish, South African man.
Far from being narcissistic, the ways in which he presents his body are inspired by his own past and constitute the backdrop to his exploration of the flaws and graces of humanity. His highly sophisticated make-up is as elegant as it is astonishing. He has exhibited and performed all over the world. A retrospective exhibition of his career is currently being prepared by the Johannesburg Museum.
