DANSER À L’ENVERS (DANCING BACKWARDS)
At the dawn of the disastrous Great War, a frenetic explosion of cabarets spread throughout Europe. Beginning in Paris in 1881 with the opening of the Chat Noir, it ended in 1916 in Zurich with the brief adventure of the Cabaret Voltaire, where the Dada movement was born. Artists explored a joyous subversion, inspired by the so-called minor artistic forms of fair, circus and music hall theatre. This carnivalesque inversion of art led to the experiments of the 20th century avant-garde.
