July 2014. Future parents Irka and Tolik live in the region of Donetsk, in eastern Ukraine, near the Russian border, a disputed territory at the outbreak of the war in Donbas. The nervous expectation of the birth of their first child is violently disrupted by the flight MH17 airline crash, further increasing tensions in their village, occupied by armed forces.
Klondike is Maryna Er Gorbach’s fifth feature. It won the World Cinema Dramatic Competition for directing at the Sundance festival and the Grand Prix of the Fribourg International Film Festival.
“An exhilarating piece of cinema, meticulously framed, exquisitely blocked, and beautifully performed, this is a film about the choices we make as the world is torn apart.” Andrew Haigh, Sundance Film Festival, 2022
“You know, in Ukraine producers and others were exhorting us to make light entertainment films and comedies. But I have always felt that we mustn’t play ostrich. When you live through war, you can only scream. Obviously it’s too late now, but I think that the film explains very well the personality of Ukrainians and how the country works.” Maryna Er Gorbach, La Liberté, 25 March 2022
