Prismes électriques
1914
The modern beauty of electric light bulbs and rail travel inspired the artist for this composition vibrating with colour.
Sonia Delaunay's simultaneous painting produces multiplying contrasts in primary and secondary colours, creating light effects and an intense optical vibration. Prism-coloured discs dazzle the onlooker's eye. One cartridge evokes the poem by French poet Blaise Cendrars, Prose on the Trans-Siberian Railway, in which the poet's thoughts alternate with the train's swift chugging. Prismes électriques creates its own energy in this perpetual motion, to the point of cosmic transcendence.
