Elmar Trenkwalder's architectonic sculptures are emblematic of the Austrian post-modernist movement and their organic forms are inspired by various artistic traditions.
Trenkwalder's ceramic sculptures are solid constructions of monumental aspect, as this 'table' evoking liturgical furniture demonstrates. The artist draws on Gothic or Baroque art and Khmer temples, while cultivating obvious affinities with Outsider Art. On closer inspection, we can observe body parts and more particularly genital organs. These recurring motifs in Trenkwalder's work adhere to the tradition of transgressing the limits of the body, a characteristic feature of Viennese Actionism.
