Cogito, ergo sum
1988
"Guessing, Not Just Knowing" was the title Trockel chose for her exhibition at MoMA, New York, in 1988 -year of the creation of this work.
This phrase might stand as an epigraph to Rosemarie Trockel's work as a whole, protean, puzzling and elusive as it is. The eye the artist casts on society is sometimes cruel and often caustic. In appearance, her works suggest a supposedly feminine world. But here, when the artist swaps her knitting needles for sophisticated computer-controlled machines, she does it to quote the philosopher René Descartes. The Cogito, ergo sum of the work could equally be translated as "I knit, therefore I am."
