Chinois de Liang-Tchéou
1932
The son of a naval officer, Alexander Jacovlev participated in the revival of the Mir Iskousstva [World of Art] movement. A tireless traveller, he went to China in 1917, and exhibited his work there. The critics considered him the first European artist to capture the specific character of the Chinese people with such perception. In 1924 he was approached by Citroën to “record indigenous customs and ways of life threatened with extinction in drawings, during a major African expedition.” In Asia and Africa alike, he accompanied his sketches with notes.
