Afro was profoundly marked by his discovery of abstract expressionism during a stay in the United States in 1950.
The vibrant brush strokes and intermingled lines create a new emotional space. The colour leans more toward tone and stretches fluidly on the surface of the canvas. This all-over treatment and his expressive gesturalism make the painter a major figure in ltalian abstraction. Like his contemporaries, Alberto Burri and Lucio Fontana, he also accords full importance to the material.
