Ghajar
1998 - 1999
In her work, photographer Shadi Ghadirian addresses the inherent contradictions in Iranian society. For the Ghajar series, she asked friends to pose in 19th century clothing and attitudes in studio sets evoking those of the Qajar dynasty (1794-1925). She thus harks back to the numerous photographic studios present in Iran at the time, while introducing highly contemporary objects into them: a Pepsi can, censored books, bicycle and so on. In this way, she makes play with anachronisms and prohibitions, denouncing the religious and political constraints to which women are subjected in her native country.
