Breaking with the dominant codes of expressionism, minimalism and conceptual art, Stingel's art reflects the neo-rococo mode that appeared in the late 1980s.
From the very beginning, Rudolf Stingel has questioned the issues at stake in painting and how it relates to context, authenticity and the notion of the creator. His works provide a new synthesis of design, the decorative arts, painting and installation. He borrows his signature materials and motifs from arabesques, wallpaper, mirrors and gilding. Here he reuses a carpet pattern to propose a space that is open to an infinity of shimmering reflections.
