"From the studies of city forms, take note of the most relevant in order to develop a method of analysis and define predictions related to urban and architectural facts." (Aymonino)
Carlo Aymonino won his first major competition in 1959, to build the National Library of Rome. The project was based on a study of urban morphology and took the approach of a building consisting of several open elements, in order to create a "city-building" integrated in its context. The project never came into being. Aymonino explored his theories on urban experimentation in his book Origini e sviluppo della città moderna (1965).
