Boucher’s photography bears the mark of his interest in printing and graphic design. Using the techniques of mechanical reproduction to new ends, he contributed to the development of photography as a medium. In their unusual angles, close-ups, and bodies in flight, his nude studies reflect not only the contemporary interest in Surrealism and in the New Vision (1920-1940) but also the beginnings of the leisure society. In 1935, photographs of his were published in Formes nues, a key work in the history of nude photography. He wrote then: “There are things that we feel that photography can capture: an energy, a movement, the physical tension in the detail of a muscle, the velvet of skin; it can let you feel cool wind on a wet, naked torso, the exertions of a sweaty body, the things we do not see precisely but sense in a general way.”
