Photo Therapy: Infantilization
1984
When Jo Spence learned she had breast cancer, she used photography as a therapy.
Beginning in the early 1970s, Spence developed her committed and feminist work in which she tackled the notions of gender, social class and self-representation. ln 1982 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The illness and its associated issues would become the subject of many photographs. ln the Photo-Therapy series, made with the artist Rosy Martin, she questions her relationship with her mother, acting the part of her mother or replaying her own role as a little girl. The title also reveals that photography is a companion that helps her to get through the disease and defend herself better against it.
