Hare with a Telescope
1990
The universal figure of the hare, sometimes burlesque, sometimes melancholic, became Flanagan's signature in 1979.
Representing the new British sculpture, Barry Flanagan began to experiment with new materials and subjects in the mid-1960s. His bronze hares with anthropomorphic postures made him famous. They constitute a parody of the heroic statuary inherited from classical art. Both powerful and vulnerable, they are also a disguised self-portrait of the artist. Compared to his iconic hares, this "model" for a never-made bronze cast is atypical in terms of its material and its fragility, and particularly touching.
