Food for Thought 11000
2013
In her collages, photographs and installations of recycled objects, Maha Malluh evokes the profound economic, social and cultural changes undergone by Saudi Arabia, the land of her birth. In the series Food for Thought, she uses audio cassettes from the 1980s, recordings of sermons propagating a rigid interpretation of Islam. Very widely distributed at the time, these cassettes are arranged on wooden trays traditionally used in the production of bread, in such a way as to create words designating Islamic concepts. The artist thus evokes the religious indoctrination of the time, a response to the modernisation of the country.
