Sans titre [homme et femme au miroir]
vers 1925 - 1930
Kardas's photographs bear witness to the principles of the New Vision through his surprising use of framing.
Walter Erich Gerull, known as Kardas, studied at the Berlin School of Arts and Crafts alongside painter Emil Orlick before taking up photography in the 1920s. Some of his pictures taken in Berlin and Italy in the 1930s are evocative of those of Alexander Rodchenko or Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. Kardas published his photos in prestigious magazines such as Arts et Métiers Graphiques and L'Illustration. When Hitler came to power, he left Germany and became friends with writer Jean Giono, with whom he collaborated on the illustrated edition of his novel Les Vraies Richesses.
