Chômeurs aux Halles
vers 1932
Having arrived from Hungary at the end of the First World War, Brassaï made a name for himself in the 1930s with his photographs of the seedy side of Parisian life.
lnfluenced by Surrealist iconography, Brassaï's poetic images of the troubling strangeness of Parisian night-life were a far cry from the standard representations of Paris at the time with cabarets and music halls. He photographed marginal and working-class figures such as butchers and the unemployed in the large Les Halles market. These pictures testify to the precarious state of France, ravaged by the economic crisis between the two wars.
