Dissatisfied with the abstract painting he was doing, in 1963 Franz Erhard Walther decided that his works would no longer be paintings or sculptures to be looked at but objects to be handled. In 1969, he completed a first series of interactive pieces in fabric (foldable, unfoldable, wearable) in simple geometric forms (1. Werksatz), several of which were shown at the exhibition “When Attitudes Become Form” (Berne, 1969). The 1980s were the years of his “Wall Formations,” structures of coloured cotton fabric hung on the wall, their dimensions derived from those of the human body. One can either, as here, just look at them, or enter inside and experience the feeling of being a sculpture or part of a sculpture. Walther has been a key figure in the transformation of art that has seen it emancipated from pure opticality.
