Working from a principle of drifting and sliding, Mathieu Mercier elaborates pieces that often evoke the aesthetics of the hardware shop and play with a vague functionality.
Mercier's work marks the meeting point and the friction between two structural trends in modernity: constructivism and the readymade. This print is part of a series in which the artist scans flowers and a Pantone colour chart, natural colour and printing colour. The scanner appears in the image. The two objects are thus reproduced along with the very instrument that reproduces them. The work takes on the appearance of a Vanitas with regard to the ineluctable image-destiny of the world.
