The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne and the Infant Saint John the Baptist (The Burlington House Cartoon) after Leonardo
2022
In this installation, Cherri focuses on acts of vandalism in museums and the emotional reactions they give rise to.
This display case contains the enlarged reproduction of the impact of a bullet that damaged the Burlington House Cartoon by Leonardo Da Vinci in 1987, as well as a sculpture made up of 19th century ocular prostheses, press cuttings and a copy of Ways of Seeing by John Berger mentioning the destructive act. The assemblage of these objects illustrates what Ali Cherri calls the "politics of visibility", which establishes a parallel between gaze and wound, attraction and repulsion, preservation and destruction of heritage.
