As a more or less conscious desire to remain close to those who have passed away, spiritualism can be a means of avoiding mourning.
Through the intermediary of her suddenly deceased son, Helen Butler Wells communicated with the spirits of well-known departed persans like Pythagoras and the lndian chief Tecumseh, as well as visitors from the planets Mars and Jupiter. Through this special communication with the afterlife, the idea was to find the deceased persan, to make them present again and thus to escape from harsh reality. Perhaps Helen Butler Wells was primarily addressing her deceased son here.
