Appleseed

In the model city of Olympus, Deunan, a female commando in a futurist world dominated by war, is confronted by the antagonism between natural humans and “bioroïdes”, artificially created humans, with limited emotions and incapable of procreating. Adapted from a cult manga SF film, this film blends motion capture for the animation of the characters and cell shading “smoothed” appearance near the animated drawing on celluloid, based on contour lines delimiting coloured flat tints. As aesthetic hybridisation between video game and 3Danimation, this title marks a turning point in Japanese production. Appleseed, by Shinji Aramaki, 2004, 100’.
