La Femme du Gange

The last act in her Indian cycle, L’Amour inspired Marguerite Duras to make La Femme du Gange, a film that comes simultaneously after India Song (in terms of substance) and before it (in terms of form), which she made in Trouville with Catherine Sellers and Nicole Hiss. On the black screen before the titles, the film director indicated: "La Femme du Gange is two films, in a way. As well as the film that unfolds in images, another purely vocal film is deployed without images. To avoid any misunderstanding, we wish to alert viewers that the two women's voice-overs in no way belong to the characters who appear in the image. We might add that the characters seen in the image are totally ignorant of the existence of the two women, whose story is told solely through the conversation they are holding."
