The event is over
Two childhood friends now in their thirties come together for a weekend hike in the forest. One, soon to be a father, has settled down; the other still leads a Bohemian lifestyle. In the course of their adventure, their differences come between them.
Kelly Reichardt, Old Joy, United States, 2007, DCP from the restored version (origin: 16 mm adapted to 35 mm), 76 min, colour, in English with French subtitles
With Daniel London, Will Oldham, Tanya Smith, Lucy Tiger Award at the Rotterdam festival 2006
Having failed for ten years to finance her projects, Kelly Reichardt worked for the first time with writer Jon Raymond in Oregon, which would become her favourite filming location. "I had read Jon's novel, The Half-Life, and I asked him if he had written any short stories […]. He sent me Old Joy, the story of a friendship that reflected the feeling of loss and alienation with which everyone around me seemed to be struggling. The presidential campaign was in full swing during the summer of 2004. The war in Iraq still seemed to be a good idea for at least half of Americans. […] Among other things, the relationship between Mark and Kurt was a beautiful metaphor for the inefficiency of the left." Kelly Reichardt, press kit for the film, 2007.
Followed by an encounter between Frank Beauvais and Kelly Reichardt
