Inspired by a popular tale in Rajasthan, Duvidha is the story of a merchant’s son who returns home with his new wife, before being sent away to run the family business. A ghost falls in love with the young woman, takes on the appearance of her absent husband and lives with her. She gives birth to a child.
Mani Kaul, Duvidha, India, 1973, 82 min, original version with French subtitles
With Raisa Padamsee and Ravi Menon
“The restoration and forthcoming re-release of four feature films by the great Mani Kaul (1944-2011) repairs a great injustice: apart from rare screenings at a few festivals, they have until now never been shown in French cinemas. The sublime Duvidha is characteristic of the Indian filmmaker’s economical style and the bewitching and sensual formal beauty of his work: the play on colours, intrusion of photography, singular framing, extraordinary sensitivity to faces, gestures and skin and attention to the smallest element of light or effect of air. Cahiers du cinéma
Preceded by the presentation of the sound recording of a conversation between Serge Daney, Mani Kaul and Nicolas Saada, at the 12th edition of the Cinéma du réel in 1990
Presented by Pierre Eugène and Eva Markovits from Cahiers du cinéma
